Abidjan, Ivory Coast
Abidjan is the economic center of both the Ivory Coast and of the whole region, including Burkina Faso and former official capital of Ivory Coast. Abidjan is a unique city in Africa. Arrecife, Canary Islands
Arrecife is a city in the Canary Islands (Spain) situated in the centre-east of the island of Lanzarote, of which it has been the capital since 1852. Its name originates from the abundance of reefs and islets along the coast (Arrecife means 'reef' in Spanish), which form a magnificent sea front promenade and provide many natural harbours. The main Shopping street, Castillo y Leon (AKA Calle Real), hosts a wide variety of shops and cafes. Some of the most noteworthy places to visit are the El Charco de San Gines, a salt-water lagoon in the city centre, the Castles of San Jose and San Gabriel.
Bijagos Archipelago
The Bissagos Islands, also Bijagos as in its Portuguese name (Arquipelago dos Bijagos) are a group of about 88 islands and islets located in the Atlantic Ocean and are part of the African nation of Guinea-Bissau. The islands contain a high degree of biodiversity, with mangrove forests, saltwater swamps and palm trees interspersed with zones of dry forest, coastal savanna and sand banks. Island rivers release nutrient-rich freshwater into the ocean, creating a breeding ground and habitat for many species, including crocodile, fish, crustaceans and mollusks, and the symbolically important sea turtles and hippopotamus. Each year, around 1 million local and migratory birds from as far away as Siberia and Northern Europe settle in the archipelago to breed.
Freetown, Sierra Leone
Freetown is the capital city of Sierra Leone and is the heart of the Western region. It is on a peninsula on the south bank of the estuary of the Sierra Leone River. The city faces one of the best natural harbours on the west coast of Africa. The peninsula is home to some of the finest beaches in Africa, which are beautiful and unspoilt. Standing in the center of downtown is the majestic cotton tree, a symbol of freedom said to have been standing since the first arrival of the free settlers. Takoradi lies on the south-western coast of Ghana, and is the smallest half of the twin city Sekondi-Takoradi, which is the capital of the Western Region. Takoradi Technical Institute houses a Fabrication laboratory, equipped by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which is the first of its kind in Africa.
